Narrative
The Syrians and Assyrians first ravaged the countries here mentioned, and that region was first favoured by the preaching of Christ. Those that want the gospel, walk in darkness, and in the utmost danger. But when the gospel comes to any place, to any soul, light comes. Let us earnestly pray that it may shine into our hearts, and make us wise unto salvation. The gospel brings joy with it. Those who would have joy, must expect to go through hard work, as the husbandman, before he has the joy of harvest; and hard conflict, as the soldier, before he divides the spoil. The Jews were delivered from the yoke of many oppressors; this was a shadow of the believer's deliverance from the yoke of Satan. The cleansing the souls of believers from the power and pollution of sin, would be by the influence of the Holy Spirit, as purifying fire. These great things for the church, shall be done by the Messiah, Emmanuel. The Child is born; it was certain; and the church, before Christ came in the flesh, benefited by his undertaking. It is a prophecy of him and of his kingdom, which those that waited for the Consolation of Israel read with pleasure. This Child was born for the benefit of us men, of us sinners, of all believers, from the beginning to the end of the world. Justly is he called Wonderful, for he is both God and man. His love is the wonder of angels and glorified saints. He is the Counsellor, for he knew the counsels of God from eternity; and he gives counsel to men, in which he consults our welfare. He is the Wonderful Counsellor; none teaches like him. He is God, the mighty One. Such is the work of the Mediator, that no less power than that of the mighty God could bring it to pass. He is God, one with the Father. As the Prince of Peace, he reconciles us to God; he is the Giver of peace in the heart and conscience; and when his kingdom is fully established, men shall learn war no more. The government shall be upon him; he shall bear the burden of it. Glorious things are spoken of Christ's government. There is no end to the increase of its peace, for the happiness of its subjects shall last for ever. The exact agreement of this prophecy with the doctrine of the New Testament, shows that Jewish prophets and Christian teachers had the same view of the person and salvation of the Messiah. To what earthly king or kingdom can these words apply? Give then, O Lord, to thy people to know thee by every endearing name, and in every glorious character. Give increase of grace in every heart of thy redeemed upon earth.

Commentary on Isaiah 9:8-21
Those are ripening apace for ruin, whose hearts are unhumbled under humbling providences. For that which God designs, in smiting us, is, to turn us to himself; and if this point be not gained by lesser judgments, greater may be expected. The leaders of the people misled them. We have reason to be afraid of those that speak well of us, when we do ill. Wickedness was universal, all were infected with it. They shall be in trouble, and see no way out; and when men's ways displease the Lord, he makes even their friends to be at war with them. God would take away those they thought to have help from. Their rulers were the head. Their false prophets were the tail and the rush, the most despicable. In these civil contests, men preyed on near relations who were as their own flesh. The people turn not to Him who smites them, therefore he continues to smite: for when God judges, he will overcome; and the proudest, stoutest sinner shall either bend or break.

Minister Kelly's Observation
Isaiah is known as the Messianic Prophet and the Evangelical Prophet. His name means "Yahweh is Salvation".  He professed the coming of the soon coming King as well as warning the people to turn from their idolatry. The purpose of this book is for the Prophet Isaiah to declare God's displeasure and judgement upon sin in the nations of Judah, Israel, and Assyria.  His greatest purpose was to lay a foundation of hope and promise for the faithful remnant of God's people.  This book is full of promises of restoration and redemption.  Isaiah paints a prophetic picture of Jesus the Messiah, "The One" who would come to save, redeem, and restore people to God.

People are focused on giving and receiving presents for Christmas, instead of being thankful for His presence. That is what Christmas is about, The Gift from God, Jesus His son, Immanuel "God with Us". This is a time of year to reflect on God's goodness, His righteous judgement, and His Mercy and Grace.
Thank you Lord for sending Your Son to die for our sins. Thank you Lord for the Gift of Salvation.

Book of Jonah

On 12/14/10 we had an awesome time discussing the Book of Jonah. Evangelist Myra, Sis. Karen, Sis. Jean and Sis. Doris. Thank you ladies for joining us for the “Tea Time Tuesday” Ladies’ Night Bible Study.
Narrative
The Book of Jonah (Hebrew: Sefer Yonah) is a book in the Hebrew Bible. It tells the story of a Hebrew prophet named Jonah ben Amittai who is sent by God to prophesy the destruction of Nineveh but tries to escape the divine mission.[1] Set in the reign of Jeroboam II (786-746 BCE), it was probably written in the post-exilic period, sometime between the late fifth to early fourth century BC.[2] The story has an interesting interpretive history (see below) and has become well-known through popular children’s stories. In Judaism it is the Haftarah for the afternoon of Yom Kippur due to its story of God's willingness to forgive those who repent.[3]
The plot centers on a conflict between Jonah and God. God calls Jonah to proclaim judgment to Nineveh, but Jonah resists and attempts to flee. He goes to Joppa and boards a ship bound for Tarshish. God calls up a great storm at sea, and the ship's crew cast Jonah overboard in an attempt to appease God. A great sea creature (the Book of Jonah says it is a fish but the New Testament reference in Matthew 12:38-41 says it to be a whale) sent by God, swallows Jonah. For three days and three nights Jonah languishes inside the fish's belly. He says a prayer in which he repents for his disobedience and thanks God for His mercy. God speaks to the fish, which vomits out Jonah safely on dry land. After his rescue, Jonah obeys the call to prophesy against Nineveh, and they repent and God forgives them. Ironically, the relentless God demonstrated in the first chapter becomes the merciful God in the last two chapters (see 3:10). In a parallel turnabout, Jonah becomes one of the most effective of all prophets, turning the entire population of Nineveh (about 120,000 people) to God.

Minister Kelly’s observation:
I always thought that Jonah was afraid of traveling on the sea or just did not want to go to Nineveh. During further study of this book, I found that he had hate in his heart towards the people because of past wars against his people of Israel.  God displays His love towards Nineveh by giving them a chance to repent before placing judgment on them.  He sent Jonah to relay His message, but Jonah took it upon himself to judge them and claimed that they did not deserve forgiveness.  God punished him for his disobedience, having been swallowed up by the whale.  Jonah repented and promised that he would deliver God’s message to the people.
We are not to decide who is worthy of God’s love and mercy.  In that case, all of us have fallen short.  We need to love our enemies.  If God has commissioned us to spread the Gospel to all nations, then that’s what we must do in spite of our feelings towards them.  God loves everyone, and we should too.

2 Timothy 1:7

2 Timothy 1:7
For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind.

When we operate in fear, we cannot reach our fullest potential. God
has not given us the spirit of fear. Fear is contrary to His Word and
is the enemy trying to penetrate the walls of our minds. God has given
us a sound mind. Fear is a disruptor of the peace that God has given
us. God has not given us the spirit of fear, but of love. Love casts
out all fear.
